What to Expect
The course provides a practical understanding of the most current science and research on empathy, focusing on two fundamental aspects:
Empathy’s hard-wired neurobiology, made possible by mirror neurons
Empathy’s cognitive components, comprised of theory-of-mind and the perspective taking process
Participants can take this online course at their own pace, stopping & starting as needed. Printed support materials, bibliography, practice exercises, required quizzes and course documentation are provided as requested.
Throughout the course we pose questions that are intended for you to reflect on what you have just learned. Many of these questions are experiential and do not have “right” or “wrong” answers. Your answers are completely confidential and are not saved, unless they are designated in a “Final Exam” and are scored for the award of your Course Certificate.
Teaching Method
Organic Learning Method (OLM)
Our teaching approach is designed to engage the organic process that allows empathic ability to develop in the human psyche.
Anchored in research in the fields of Neurobiology, Dynamic Systems Theory, Relational Self-Psychology and Intersubjectivity Theory, the goal of OLM is to re-engage a developmental process that may have been dormant since childhood.
Our focus is on re-engaging a developmental process rather than simply on behavioral change. This process involves working with both the conscious and unconscious mind, including hard-wired and cognitively learned mental patterns. Whereas traditional teaching approaches stress the cognitive, OLM introduces emotion/feeling as co-equal elements in the emotional intelligence learning process.
Teaching Goals
We will….
Deconstruct empathy and provide practical and sustainable tools that improve participant’s empathy-skills and effectiveness when engaging with others regardless of context, whether at home or the workplace.
Practice the “Empathy Roadmap,” an experiential step-by-step process designed to elucidate and strengthen specific skills in the empathic attunement process.
Engage the participant by focusing on Empathy Games® and experiential learning that integrate the underlying theoretical constructs.
Gain a new and deeper understanding of what empathy is and how it works, as well as a method of measuring empathic ability.
Strengthen respect for cultural, individual, and role differences through greater empathic awareness and sensitivity to all aspects of age, gender identity, race, ethnicity, cultural, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomic status.
